Tikal One Day Birding Trip

Tikal is one of the best places for birding in Guatemala; More than 400 species of birds have been recorded within Tikal National Park, including 30 birds of prey and 60 migratory bird species.

The exuberant forest and the impressive temples present magic and mysticism and also work as a platform to observe birds. Due to the rarity and number of species of fauna especially birds, Tikal is considered an important bird area in Guatemala, situated within the Maya-Lacandon IBA – GT001, with an extension of 55,005 hectares.

Some Species that you can spot in our Tikal one day birding trip are: Great Curassow, Ocellated Turkey, White-fronted Parrot, Mealy Parrot, Crested Eagle Orange-breasted Falcon, Slaty-tailed Trogon, Keel-billed Toucan, Chestnut-colored Woodpecker, Sulphur-bellied Flycatcher, White-bellied Wren, and Montezuma Oropendola among others.

    Itinerary

    Day Trip

Our Tikal one-day birding trip starts early in the morning from Flores, nearby hotels, El Remate or hotels located inside Tikal National Park.

Starting the birding tour from Flores to Tikal will take about one hour drive (65 Kilometers), and about 30 minutes from El Remate. Then after arriving, we will continue visiting some of the water reservoirs and through hiking trails under the tropical forest coming at the central plaza where we have the first opportunity to spot the Orange-breasted Falcon.

After visiting this area will continue to temple number 4, the second area where regularly we spot the Falcon. We return to parking lot walking through other sectors with an excellent opportunity for bird observation.

Our one-day birding trip in Tikal will take you through the hiking trails in the humid subtropical forest; rare species found nesting in Tikal include the Orange-breasted Falcon (Falco deiroleucus) and the Crested Eagle (Morphus guianensis), which makes Tikal one of the few nesting areas in Central America for this species.
